A New Beginning

“The Mid-Day meal programme is one programme which changed my course of the journey.”

Starting from feeding 10000 students, the midday meal programme of Adamya Chetana, Annapoorna reaches more than 2 lakh children across innumerable schools in Bengaluru, Hubballi-Dharawad, Kalaburagi, Ranebennur and Jodhpur. Dr. Tejaswini and her initiative ‘Annapoorna’ was instrumental in bringing down the dropout rate among school children.

“One proper meal can really make a change.”

Adamya Chetana provides supply freshly cooked and nutritious food like rice and sambar, curd rice, pongal, bisi-bele-bhaat, daal, Roti, Daliya etc. from their very own kitchen in the city. Further, she also talks about Aata-Paatha and now Oota, which means Play, Learn & Eat. The concept was started to make learning interesting for kids with colourful vans reaching across these schools with a motive of ‘other than blackboard method’.

“In education, other than blackboard method is always so attractive to the students in all mediums. We decided to bring in some life in the school otherwise, it’s so boring.”

Green Bengaluru

Ever since Mr. Ananth Kumar came across an article in New York Times stating then Bangalore as ‘a garbage city’; Dr. Tejaswini realized “the biggest problem is the waste coming from the kitchen.” Now the question was ‘How to reduce the waste?’

‘Change begins from home’; I’m sure, is echoed by many people around the world but how many of us follow this? Dr. Tejaswini Ananth Kumar started recycling 100% of their garbage in the kitchen for biogas to be used in the kitchen.

“Since the last 10 years, my kitchen is zero garbage kitchen… Since last 10 years, I’ve not given any garbage to Bengaluru Municipal Corporation.”

The segregated waste is converted to briquettes which are used as an alternate method for gas cylinder. Her initiative today has contributed to the increase in ‘Green Kitchen’ resulting in increased green cover of this city.

“I use briquette, that’s our cylinder, which saves 50 LPG cylinders per day.”
