‘You can do Anything and Everything’

Dr Subramaniam founded Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM) at the age of 19 years. This was the beginning of his extraordinary success. Most of us think that to be successful, we have to be in the right place, right circumstance and the right age. But the best time is to get started now. It just requires the right amount of determination and vow to achieve.

He mentions an incident where he would often visit Ramakrishna Ashram in Gandhi Bazar.

“Next two months changed my life.”

Dr. Subramaniam consumed the knowledge reading all the 8-volume set of Swami Vivekananda. He was inspired to be something different. He talks about these two books: Vivekananda: His Call to the Nation and Swami Vivekananda’s Call to the Youth of India, which completely changed his outlook towards life.

“Once you understand Swami Vivekananda, you can’t sit quietly.”

There are times when we can all use some inspiration to motivate ourselves and create a social identity perspective.

Epiphany

“What you gave me was not medicine, what you gave me was pieces of paper every day.” – from a grieving mother

Years ago, as a medical resident in India, Dr. Balasubramaniam was disturbed by the fact that 80% of doctors were taking care of only 20% of India’s population. He was convinced that the medical system had failed the mother and his son. He says: “If the system is so rotten that it can’t take care of the citizens, maybe I don’t fit in here.”

Today under his leadership the organization-built hospitals, schools and livelihood initiatives throughout the state of Karnataka. Today Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM) is one of India’s leading developmental NGO.
