Dr. Kamini Rao's Master Class

Padma Shri Dr. Cholenahally Nanjappa Manjunath, popularly known as Dr. C N Manjunath, is an Indian cardiologist. He joined the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences & Research in 1988 as a lecturer and now heads the organization as the director. ‘Treatment First and Payment Next’ was introduced under his leadership in this institute, one of the largest Single Heart Care Centre in the South East Asian Region. Being an innovator of balloon mitral valvuloplasty, he has to his credit the highest number of balloon mitral valvuloplasty using Accura balloon catheter in India. After completing his graduation from Mysore Medical College, he secured his MD from the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute and further pursued his MD from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. Dr. Manjunath has been awarded the second-highest civilian award of the Government of Karnataka, Rajyotsava Prashasti, in 1998. He is an eminent personality amongst his medical colleagues for his knowledge and expertise, forbye his patients for his treatment and social behaviour. His research work was published in several articles and scientific papers published in peer-reviewed national and international journals. Much of his life, work and achievements have been documented by veteran journalist MK Bhaskar Rao in a book titled ‘Biography of a living legend.’ Besides being a cardiologist, Dr. Manjunath is a Writer, Director, Researcher and Academician. Dr. Manjunath’s Juvenescence

Born to Mr. Chamaraje Nanjappa Gowda in a family of 8 children, consisting of three brothers and five sisters, Dr. Manjunath is the only doctor. His father was a progressive farmer. The initial years of his schooling (till Std. 7) was in Cholenahally Channarayapatna Taluk of Hassan district. Later, he moved to Bangalore to complete his secondary and higher secondary schooling from Vidya Vardhaka Sangha Trust & School. The shift from Kannada medium to English medium was challenging for him, nevertheless, he developed a liking for English, by reason of cricket commentary. “Today in this long journey of 10 years as a director of this institute, I have fully succeeded in making this hospital, a corporate hospital in the government sector.”

The director of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences & Research began his journey in this institute in 1988 as a member of the faculty. With his leadership potentials, he has proved to the nation that a government hospital can function as a five-star corporate hospital. Under his headship, the hospital has seen a growth of 500% progress in the last twelve years. The bed capacity has increased from 300 to 1800 in a single speciality sector. His emphasis was on the volume-revenue model, improvement in quality services and bringing down the cost of procedures. 44th president of the United States, Barack Obama commended the institute for high-quality cardiac care at lower costs, making it economical even for the disadvantaged section of the society. Many hospitals are now trying to adopt the Jayadeva model of running their administration.

Manjunath’s Technique

Dr. C N Manjunath is the innovator of a new technique of performing Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty, which has been termed the ‘Manjunath’s Technique’. He further describes how his research on Accura Balloon used for Balloon Valvuloplasty Operations was effective in bringing down the cost of these operations from Rs. 70000 to Rs. 15000-18000. ‘Treatment First Payment Next concept’ is Dr. Manjunath’s mantra and he even speaks meticulously about the 3T approach to the viewers: Talk, Touch and Treat.

Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences & Research has made a world record of performing 200 angioplasties in a period of 5 days. The organization is also credited with the record of the highest number of balloon mitral valvuloplasties using Accura balloon catheter in India.
