Dr. Kamini Rao's Master Class

This session of Dr. Kamini Rao’s Master Class brings an exclusive conversation with Dr. B N Gangadhar, President of Medical Assessment & Rating Board at the National Medical Commission. Previously, Dr. Gangadhar was posted in the Ethics and Medical Registration Board in the same organisation. He has been a Senior Professor of Psychiatry with several years of experience in the field of mental health. Back in 2016, he assumed the charge of the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) and headed the Advanced Centre for Yoga. As a pioneer in clinical and research work on the application of Yoga in psychiatric disorders and mental health, he was conferred with D.Sc. from SVYASA Yoga University.

What brings Peace, Bliss, Health and Joy?

Like your body, your brain needs exercise too, and this is crucial for mental health. Yoga trains the mind and body to bring emotional balance.

“Yoga is the central thing in mental health.”

With yoga, brain cells develop new connections, and changes occur in brain structure as well as function, resulting in improved cognitive learning and memory. Surprisingly, yoga makes your brain work better. It’s one of those few physical activities which connects your brain to your body. He further states: “Applied yoga in the health system has taken a big lead in the last couple of decades.”

What comes to your mind when we talk about an antidote to stress?

Yoga is more than just stretching. This ancient practice combines an underlying philosophy of self-compassion and consciousness besides physical fitness.

“Practicing yoga not only brings down stress and anxiety, but also the cortisol level.”

It is a powerful tool for stress relief and anxiety as it promotes relaxation, which is the natural opposite of increasing cortisol levels- termed as the stress hormones. When it comes to de-stressing and reducing cortisol levels, can there be a healthier choice than yoga?

Are you one of those people who see every experience in life as an opportunity to learn?

“We should always keep our mind open for learning from all experiences,” says, the former Director of NIMHANS. What a powerful message to the viewers! Every experience in our life contains a lesson, and by being amenable, you are receptive to a wide variety of ideas. There’s no way one can overestimate the importance of learning. Take every experience as an opportunity to learn and evolve.

“Both psychiatrists and psychiatric patients were stigmatised in the pre-colonial era.” Why does Dr. Gangadhar say so? Is the situation better now? What are the existing challenges in this field? Know all your answers in this episode of Dr. Kamini Rao’s Master Class.
