Anant Nagarkatte, popularly known as Anant Nag is a versatile artist in Kannada cinema and a man with no-failures by the critics. In his career spanning 47 years, he has been a part of more than 200 films together with Marathi, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Hindi films. His enormous contribution to Kannada cinema is astonishing. He has been a part of an extremely successful show like Malgudi Days by R.K. Narayan. He has been a part of 13 episodes of the series aired on Doordarshan. He made his Bollywood debut with the movie ‘Nishant’. An early riser, an adherent follower of Bhagavad Gita, a family man and a fabulous actor; Mr. Anant Nag is everything that places him in the category of New India Cinema Actors. Anant Nag and his strong foundation

Being a part of Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin (CSB) community, Mr. Anant Nag’s childhood was spent in Ananda Ashram in Chitrapura mutt in Uttara Kannada. He was much inclined by the religious activities of the ashram and the mutt.

“The first 12 years spent there not just trained me for the career of an actor, but prepared me as a person, as a human being. It taught me everything.” Says Mr. Anant Nag.

He describes his journey while mentioning the solid foundation laid by the Ashrama founded by Swami Ramadas in Mr. Nag’s life. He was taught 700 verses of Bhagwad Gita and Shlokas there.

“Today I recite few of these shlokas and particularly chapter 7,12,14,15 and 16.”

These classics tell us about the past of a group, religion or nation. These are values which form the mainstay of Indian ethos. They teach us how to become a good human being and the real importance of relations in life.

A Rough Patch

“I was detained in 10th Standard for a second year and that crushed my spirit and I was not myself.”

He was sent to Mumbai for further studies and the sudden switch from Kannada to English medium was an arduous journey. He describes those moments of his life as distressing but certainly something that has helped him reach where he stands today.

Mr. Nag is the elder brother of late Kannada actor Shankar Nag, and he talks about the special bond which he shared with him. In 11 years, Shankar Nag had done 80 films.

“He was just 35 when he left us”

Minchina Ota marked the first collaboration of Mr. Nag and his brother Shankar Nag. They together worked in a series of films like Janma Janmada Anubandha, Nodi Swamy Navirodu Hige, Accident and finally in the popular television series Malgudi Days.

Further on the show, he talks about how the lockdown has affected the film industry. Mr. Nag also highlights the importance of our Indian OTT platforms and how the rise in use of Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. has led to reduced footfalls in movie theatres.
